Space member sets sights on world record

Thursday 15 November, 2007

Space member Arnold Cooke is to compete in Concept 2 Indoor Rowing Rowing Championships. Here's an extract from an article in from the Bath Chronicle, 15 November 2007:

Chemotherapy is gruelling for both the body and mind.

But a veteran rower from Bath is to compete in an unforgiving sporting event this weekend - despite only just finishing a bout of cancer treatment in July.

Dr Arnold Cooke will take part in the Concept 2 British Indoor Rowing Championships on Sunday.

Dr Cooke, president of Bath's Minerva Rowing Club, is hoping to retain the senior's British record he set last year - and have another crack at the world record which eluded him last year by just one and a half seconds.

Last year the 66-year-old's efforts were enough to see him named British champion in the over-65 event. ...

But his success should come as no surprise. He is a former Olympian, having competed in the 1964 Tokyo games. ...

He will once again be testing his mettle in the competition, and has been having his training performance monitored at Space Health & Fitness in Bear Flat.
