How SpaceGym Helped Me Finally Stick to a Fitness Routine
Taking a break from the screen with my SpaceGym!
Like most people, I’ve always had good intentions when it came to fitness. I would fire myself up for a few weeks — a new routine, new gear, a new plan — only to feel the enthusiasm slowly fizzle out. Work, travel, injuries, or just life getting in the way. Sound familiar?
It wasn’t for lack of effort. I have always enjoyed staying active (admittedly in the pursuit of fun), whether it’s surfing, squash, golf, or anything outdoors. But actually training for the sake of training has always been a challenge.
Having competed at county level (long ago) in athletics and swimming before becoming a Fitness Instructor I know how to get fit and remember how great it felt to be in peak shape.
One trick that always helped with motivation was signing up (and paying for) a challenging event that would require some serious training. I would sign up for something silly like an ironman triathlon event and enjoy an active summer of running, cycling and swimming in preparation for the dreaded day.
After the event i would usually remain fixated on the running, that ‘runners high’ is real and would usually see me through the rest of summer and autumn. But come the bitter British winter the icy air and freezing rain would slowly lead to skipped runs and a broken unrecoverable routine. Switching to the treadmill never lasted more than a few weeks, the fun was always exploring the countryside and pushing myself to see what’s around the next bend… and the one after that!
Why Traditional Fitness Routines Never Stuck
Over the years, I’ve tried just about everything: gym memberships, online programs, expensive equipment gathering dust in the corner of the room. The problem wasn’t (always) motivation — it was friction.
Driving to the gym, fighting for machines, feeling like I needed a solid 90-minute block just to make it worthwhile... it all became too easy to skip, especially when work or travel picked up.
I needed something simple. Something that met me where I was.
Discovering SpaceGym
I first came across SpaceGym while recovering from a hernia operation (you can read more about that journey here). It played a huge role in helping me safely rebuild strength without putting strain on my healing body.
But even after the rehab phase, I found myself reaching for it — not because I had to, but because I genuinely wanted to.
SpaceGym isn’t just a rehab tool. It’s become my go-to way to stay fit without disrupting the rest of my life.
How SpaceGym Made It Easy to Stay Consistent
Here’s why it worked when so many other routines didn’t:
1. No Commute, No Setup, No Excuses
Having SpaceGym right there in my home office means I can knock out a full-body session in just 15–20 minutes — no driving, no waiting for machines, no complicated setup.
When time’s tight (which is most days), that’s the difference between getting a workout in and skipping it.
Pro Tip!: Don’t pack it away. If you shove it under the sofa, it’s too easy to forget about. I keep mine within my peripheral vision when I’m at my desk. That way, when I need a quick breakout or start feeling lethargic, I hop on for a fast session.
2. Adaptive Resistance = Smarter Training
The harder you pull, the harder it pulls back.
This flywheel system naturally scales to your energy levels, so even on days when I wasn’t feeling 100%, I could still get quality work in without pushing too hard and risking injury.
On stronger days, it challenged me just as much as heavy free weights would — without the intimidation factor.
3. Versatility = No Boredom
One day it's a quick upper body blast before heading out. Another day it’s a more structured lower body session, or just some core stability work out in the garden.
SpaceGym’s flexibility kept things fresh and interesting, which is half the battle when it comes to sticking to anything long term.
4. Packability = No Disruptions
Whether I’m visiting family, traveling, or just want to train outdoors, SpaceGym’s lightweight, portable design means my fitness routine doesn’t have to go on hold.
The Results
I use my SpaceGym everyday without fail (sometimes two or three times), admittedly sometimes only for 5-10 minutes. But after a few months of regular (but realistic) sessions, I noticed real changes — and not just physically:
More energy, slimmer waistline and more muscle definition.
Less stiffness from long working days.
A noticeable difference in my paddle endurance when surfing and more powerful golf swings.
And probably most important — a mindset shift around training.
Instead of being something I should do, exercise became something I actually looked forward to.
Final Thoughts
If you’re someone who’s struggled to stay consistent, or you feel like traditional fitness routines just don’t fit into your lifestyle anymore, I genuinely recommend giving SpaceGym a look.
It helped me finally crack the code on building a sustainable, flexible, and enjoyable fitness habit — and I think it could do the same for you.
